The market for motor oils is known to be highly dynamic. What is currently gaining momentum in Asia is already everyday life at Volkswagen. The German car manufacturer convinces the market with the new Longlife IV (Longlife 4) property and the corresponding VW 508 00 and VW 509 00 approvals.
But why is VW launching new approvals and what makes them so special? The fact that they are not compatible with their predecessors, in contrast to the previous VW engine oil approvals, also gives them a special character. What is ultimately behind the new approvals and which manufacturers are already working with the new VW Longlife IV property, you will find out later.
Longlife IV - VW and Audi engines with EURO 6 norm
Until now, the Longlife III feature was considered to be Volkswagen's most modern development of a dynamic oil change interval. In connection with the VW 504 00 and VW 507 00 approval, an oil change interval of up to 30,000 kilometers or every 2 years can be achieved. In addition, they can be used for a large number of other VW approvals at the same time.
With the development of the VW 508 00 (gasoline engines) and VW 509 00 (diesel engines) approvals, the German automotive group for the first time relies on prescribing a 0W-20 engine oil with a so-called Longlife-IV property.
Also known comprehensively as "VW Blue Oil" (a usually bluish coloration of the engine oil is to prevent accidental mixing with other engine oils and releases), it is currently prescribed for the two engines around 2.0 TFSI (140 KW) and 3.0 TDI CR (160 KW). These are new engines of the VAG Group (VW and Audi) that comply with the EURO 6 emission standard. This oil standard is of particular interest in view of the current issue of diesel engines and driving bans.
Currently, some Audi A4, Audi A5 and Audi Q7 models are equipped with both engine types.
Due to the Longlife 4 feature, oil change intervals of up to 30,000 kilometers / 2 years can also be achieved and are thus still above the intervals of many other manufacturers.
The releases around the 0W-20 engine oil also comply with ACEA A1/B1 specifications, which in turn represent a low HTHS (High Temperature High Shear) viscosity (2.9-3.5 mPas for xW-30) and especially low HTHS viscosity (> 2.6 mPas for xW-20).
What are the advantages of VW 508 00 and VW 509 00 releases with Longlife 4?
Like any other new release, the VW approvals also stand for improved engine oil properties. First of all, the above-average engine protection due to reduced foaming, corrosion and wear. Furthermore, it ensures less deposits in the diesel engine and protects the exhaust aftertreatment system. In addition to the protective effects, the Longlife-IV property enables low fuel consumption. According to various oil manufacturers this saving can be up to 4%.
When using an engine oil with VW 508 00 and VW 509 00 release, the engine should run permanently smooth, independent of the driven speed and operating temperatures.
Contrary to the previous VW releases around 507 00, 504 00, 501 00 and many more, the VW 508 00 and VW 509 00 releases are not backwards compatible. This means that the new VW approvals cannot also be used if an engine requires an older VW fuel or diesel approval. The low viscosity 0W-20 engine oils are only suitable for the two mentioned engine types.

Future prospects of VW 508 00 and VW 509 00 Release
Of course, the new VW engine oil approvals will not only be reserved for the two previous engines. According to the unanimous opinions of various oil manufacturers, up to 15 or 20 additional engine types will follow, which will be compatible with the 0W-20 Longlife IV (Longlife 4) engine oil. In comparison: This estimate corresponds to approximately every second engine type, which will then be installed in the different models of VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat and Porsche.
Ultimately, this is not an atypical trend, as the development of even lower-emission engine oils is the focus of other automobile manufacturers and is anything but before its time.
