Mercedes-Benz Engine Oil 0W-20 MB 229.71 is the official OEM engine oil from Mercedes-Benz for MB 229.71 operating regulation. It thus meets the prescribed standard for modern Mercedes engines with exhaust aftertreatment and EURO 6.
Mercedes 0W-20 Low SPAsh engine oil has been developed for use in gasoline and diesel engines that place increased demands on the oxidation stability of an engine oil as well as the requirement for reduced proportions of sulfur, phosphate and sulfate ash. These are in particular diesel engines with diesel particulate filter (DPF) and SCR or gasoline engines with gasoline particulate filter (OPF).
MB 229.51 or 229.71 - Which engine oil for your Mercedes?!
You ask yourself which engine oil is the right one for your Mercedes-Benz and where are the differences between the different approvals? We give you an overview and help you when buying the right engine oil for your car in the ATO24 Online Shop:
The Mercedes MB 229.1 release is aimed exclusively at vehicles without particulate filters: it is released for use in many gasoline engines and partly in diesel engines without diesel particulate filters.
The MB 229.31 engine oil is the first generation of releases introduced by Mercedes-Benz for engine oils that have the Low SPAsh property. These engine oils are therefore particularly suitable for use in vehicles with diesel engines with diesel particulate filters, but can also be used in very many gasoline engines.
In further development of the MB 229.31 release, Mercedes has developed the second generation of Low SPAsh operating specifications with the MB 229.51 and MB 229.52 releases against the background of constantly increasing demands on modern engines and their engine oils in terms of efficiency and emissions.
With the MB 229.71 and MB 229.72 approvals, Mercedes-Benz has introduced the third generation of Low SPAsh engine oils into the Group's internal operating specification system. The lowered high-temperature viscosity with the SAE 20 viscosity index is particularly striking. While 229.51 and 229.52 engine oils still covered a viscosity range from 0W-30 through 0W-40 to 5W-30 and 5W-40, 229.71 engine oils are exclusively 0W-20 and 5W-20 oils.
Can be used in a wide range of Diesel and Gasoline engines!
An engine oil according to the MB 229.71 release is to be used in the following passenger car gasoline engines:
- M 139.9 (transverse) four-cylinder engine in W177 A45 S AMG 4MATIC+, C118 CLA 45 AMG 4MATIC+, H247 GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC+
- M 254 (except M 254 Hybrid) - use 0W-20 viscosity only!
In addition, an engine oil of MB 229.71 release is prescribed in the following diesel engines with diesel particulate filter DPF or can be used in them:
- OM 608 four-cylinder diesel engine e.g. in A 160 d W177, B 160 d W247, A 180 d W177, B 180 d W247, CLA 180 d C118
- OM 608.9 in Citan W415
- OM 654 (except Hybrid!) four-cylinder engine e.g. in C 180 d W205 from 07/2018, E 200 d W213 from 04/2019
